How to be a good advocate for your loved one - Lizzy Care Guide

Advocating for your loved ones needs is a crucial responsibility

Becoming a good advocate is a crucial responsibility for any caregiver. As an advocate for your loved one you serve as their “voice.” You are their supporter and activist; championing the health, legal, financial, social and daily living needs of your loved one and ensuring they are met.

You don’t need to live with or near your loved one to be their advocate. You can ask to be contacted or dialed into visits or be kept up-to-date with regular phone calls, emails and other communications.

The important part of being an advocate is listening and understanding what your loved one wants and being able to share that information with others involved in their care and fight for it as and when you need to. It will sometimes require you to be an interpreter of your loved one’s needs. As a caregiver, you have a bird’s eye view and sensitivity to your loved one’s situation.

This course will cover some of the different aspects of being a good advocate in your loved ones care.
