A durable power of attorney (DPOA) is a legal document that gives someone you trust the authority to make decisions on your behalf if you are no longer able to make them yourself. This can include financial decisions, like managing bank accounts or paying bills, as well as healthcare decisions if it’s a healthcare-specific DPOA. The term “durable” means that the power of attorney remains in effect even if you become mentally or physically incapacitated.
For individuals living with dementia, having a DPOA in place early, while the person is still able to make informed decisions, is especially important. It ensures that someone they trust can step in and help manage important aspects of their life if needed. Without this document, families often face complicated and time-consuming legal processes just to gain the authority to make necessary decisions.
At Lizzy Care, we always encourage families to have conversations about advance planning as early as possible. These discussions can feel overwhelming, but they’re a crucial part of ensuring peace of mind for everyone involved. If you’re unsure where to start or need help connecting with a qualified elder law attorney, Lizzy Care can help. We’re here to guide you through the process and make sure you have the right support in place every step of the way.
