December 2024
The holidays are a wonderful time to come together and reflect on cherished memories, and including your loved one with dementia in those moments can bring joy to everyone. While their memory may not be what it once was, reminiscing about the past can still be a meaningful way to connect. Start with topics that might spark happy and familiar recollections, like favorite family traditions, holiday meals, or treasured decorations. Using visual cues, such as old photographs, ornaments, or music, can make the memories more tangible and engaging.
It’s important to create a safe, supportive space for your loved one to share what they can. If sadder memories arise, be prepared to listen with compassion. Acknowledge their feelings and gently guide the conversation toward uplifting moments. For example, if a loss comes up, you might shift to celebrating the person’s life and the joy they brought to the holidays.
Keep in mind that dementia can make long conversations overwhelming. Allow your loved one to engage in smaller, manageable bursts and be ready to pivot if they seem tired or disoriented. Even if their memories are fragmented, they’ll feel valued simply by being included.
